Examples of biomass usage

How do we use biomass energy?

Biomass energy can be used in the same way as many other types of renewable and non-renewable energy. Common applications include heating buildings and converting it into bio fuels used in transportation such as ethanol and biodiesel.

But what is biofuel?

Biofuel is simply any fuel made from biomass. It is also possible to use the same process that makes fuels from biomass to make a wide variety of household products such as plastics, acids, toothpaste gels, antifreeze, artificial sweeteners, and adhesives. These raw materials can then in turn be used to make even more products such as film, synthetic fabrics and foam used in building insulation.

How does biomass energy work?

Originally biomass was burned to create steam that drove a turbine used to generate electricity. However, this is an inefficient use of biomass energy, and it can create poelectricityllution when not carefully controlled. Therefore, other ways of converting biomass into energy are now becoming more popular. One of these is biomass gasification, a process in which biomass is heated under pressure in the presence of oxygen. This creates carbon monoxide and hydrogen which can then be used to generate electricity in a more efficient and cleaner manner. Another way to convert biomass to energy is the use of anaerobic microorganisms to break down sewage and manure into carbon dioxide and methane. The methane can then be trapped and burned to create heat energy.

You can use biomass for heating your home or for fuel to power your car

There are several different ways to use biomass as a source of energy. For example, you can heat your home using wood pellets or purchase clean energy derived from biomass. You can also use a biomass alternative fuel to power your car and purchase products that are made from biomass. In order to make energy production from biomass more efficient and more common, scientists will need to determine how to optimize the process. Therefore, supporting these research efforts will make biomass energy more readily available in the future.

Celebrities go green

Recently, many celebrities have promoted biomass energy use.

Actor Woody Harrelson drives a bio fuel powered bus while promoting awareness of clean energy sources.

In addition to having solar powered homes, actress Daryl Hannah uses biodiesel to power her vehicles, and she even processes it in her home. These efforts earned her the Environmental Media Association Greenlight Award. Finally, actor Leonardo di Caprio runs a foundation that promotes the use of renewable sources of energy, including biomass.

Biomass is quickly becoming a popular renewable resource because it raises fewer environmental concerns when compared to fossil fuel sources. Scientists and engineers are still working to improve the efficiency of converting biomass into energy, yet many people can already incorporate bio fuels and bio fuel-derived products into their daily lives. Like the many celebrities who have used their popular status to promote the use of renewable energy sources, we can encourage the use of biomass by informing our friends and families about what it is and its advantages.
